When did you first feel like a “real” adult? Was it when you became a mom or maybe it was when you found your first gray hair? For me, the turning point was when I realized I’d rather buy things for my home than clothes. In my Pinterest-perfect, white-picket-fence fantasy, my home looks just like the glossy pages of the Pottery Barn catalogs that I seem to receive every other day in the mail. Unless I want to go Pottery Bankrupt, purchasing full-price Pottery Barn items is just not feasible for my budget. Fortunately, there are many ways to get Pottery Barn for less. In fact, there are so many ways to save that I had to break down this article into two installments. Here’s the first group of money-saving tips:
1. Join Pottery Barn’s email list and receive 10% off your next online order
When you visit Pottery Barn’s website, a pop-up window asking you to sign up for Pottery Barn emails should appear on your screen. Type your email address in the designated box and click on “Submit.” If a pop-up window did not appear on your screen, you can also sign up for Pottery Barn emails by entering your email address in the designated box in the bottom left-hand corner of the homepage. Within a few hours, you’ll receive an email containing a coupon code good for 10% off your next PotteryBarn.com order of $100 or more (deal subject to change).
KCL Tip: By signing up for emails, you will be the first to hear about exclusive offers, discounts and promotions. However, you should expect near daily emails. If you don’t want to overwhelm your primary email account, I recommend signing up for emails with a secondary email address or an email address you use solely for retail promotions and shopping.
2. Use a Pottery Barn Credit Card and receive 10% back in rewards
The Pottery Barn Credit Card is a store credit card that can be used at any Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Bed and Bath, Pottery Barn Kids, and PBteen store, catalog and website. Cardholder benefits include:
Access to Exclusive cardholder promotions
Earn rewards certificates through the Pottery Barn Rewards Program:
Receive one point for every dollar spent with your Pottery Barn or Pottery Barn Kids Credit Card at any Pottery Barn or its sister stores.
For every 250 points accumulated, you’ll receive a $25 Rewards Certificate, redeemable at Pottery Barn or its sister stores.
Your account must be open, in good standing and/or not more than two payments past due at the time the Rewards Certificates are issued.
Rewards Certificates must be used within 180 days of the date of issuance. Customer points expire after 36 months.
KCL Tip: The Pottery Barn Credit Card has a very high APR of 22.80%; as such, you should only consider using this credit card if you are confident you can pay your balance in full each and every month.
3. I kid you not! Try finding “adult” Pottery Barn look-alike items at PBteen and Pottery Barn Kids
Just because you’re an adult, doesn’t mean you can’t furnish your home with furniture and decor from PBteen and Pottery Barn Kids. In fact, PBteen and Pottery Barn Kids often have products that look nearly identical to their grown-up Pottery Barn counterparts, but at a lower price point. Here’s just one of many look-alike items I’ve found at PBteen and PBKids:
Pottery Barn: Airgo Swivel Desk Chair, $299 PBteen “Look-alike”: Airgo Twin Armchair, $169 Savings: $130 (a 43.4% savings!)
4. Keep your eyes peeled for knockoffs at lower-priced retailers:
Imitation is the sincerest (and most wallet-friendly) form of flattery. Get the Pottery Barn look at a fraction of the price by purchasing knockoffs at lower-priced retailers such as Target, World Market, IKEA, Pier 1 Imports, Walmart and Birch Lane. Check out these knockoffs:
Pottery Barn: Pottery Barn Paloma Mirror, $159 Knockoff: Target Threshold Round Captain’s Mirror, $29.99 Savings: $129.01 (a 81.1% savings!)
Pottery Barn: Pottery Barn Tibetan Barstool, $99 Knockoff: Birch Lane Collier Black Stool, $47 Savings: $52 (a 53% savings!)
KCL Tip: One of the easiest ways to find Pottery Barn knockoffs is to harness the power of Pinterest. In the upper right-hand corner of your Pinterest homepage, select “Pins” and “Show: All Pins.” Then enter “Pottery Barn knockoff” in the designated search box. Your search results should include hundreds of Pottery Barn knockoffs pinned by other users. Take time to experiment with your search phrases. For example, you may want to try searching Pinterest for “Pottery Barn look-alikes” or “PBteen knockoffs” or “Pottery Barn dupes.”
5. Secondhand savings: score great deals on eBay and Craigslist
If you want to go the pre-owned route, eBay and Craigslist always have a ton of Pottery Barn items. My biggest piece of advice when shopping on these sites for Pottery Barn items is to be on the lookout for listings that use the descriptor “Pottery Barn style” or similar phrasing. “Pottery Barn style” usually means that the item looks like something that might be sold in a Pottery Barn store, but it’s not actually a Pottery Barn item. Be aware that just because something is Pottery Barn style doesn’t mean that it is Pottery Barn quality.
KCL Tip: One savvy way to find great deals on Pottery Barn items listed on eBay, Craigslist and other secondhand seller websites, is to harness the power of the Google reverse image search. Here’s how you do it:
Find the official photo of the product you are interested in on the Pottery Barn website.
Save that image as a .jpg or .png file on your computer.
Go to the Google Images website.
Click on the icon that looks like a small black camera.
Select “Upload an Image.”
Use the “Choose File” button to upload the Pottery Barn image you saved on your computer in the second step.
Your search results will include websites that include that same picture (e.g., an eBay listing for that Pottery Barn item or a second-hand furniture store selling that item) as well as websites that include similar images (great for finding knockoffs!).
